Thoughts from Isty, Kristy Haines, Program Director

Just recently I had the opportunity to work with a wonderful youth group. They came to camp to participate in our GIC course. It was finally to the stage of the high ropes. They were on our element which is called the single person pamper pole. This element is about a 20 foot climb and from the top of the pole you jump over to hang on a trapeze bar. One by one I witnessed these kids climb up the pole and so effortlessly jump to the trapeze. Then one of the boys turned to me and asked if he could do it blindfolded. There he was completely blind and ready to leap in mid air, hoping to find the trapeze bar to cling to; and yet again with such ease he confidently jumped into the air and grabbed onto the trapeze. When back on the ground everyone surrounded him with congratulations and questions about the jump. Over and over others would ask him, "How did you know where the bar was?" His answer was, "I just jumped knowing it was in front of me."

In Hebrews 11:1 it says this, "Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see." In this one leap of faith this youth gave me the best visual of what our faith walk is with Christ. Often times it is hard to understand the method to God’s work, but thanks to His Word we have a promise that we can cling to even when we can’t see His plan right in front of us. Summer after summer and retreat after retreat I’m reminded that I can be hopeful and certain in my faith through the campers and families I meet. Many blessings in your walk with Christ, and let us all be so bold to leap with certainty and cling to cross!

A Letter from Red Sky, John Busch, Camp Director

Go back with me to 1934. Our country was in the midst of the depression, the world was in turmoil, the dust bowl was a new synonym for Oklahoma, and, by the way, there was no internet. This was also the year that Lutherhoma had its start. You are invited to the 75th Anniversary of Camp Lutherhoma on September 5, 2009. A great celebration is being planned, centered around a huge Bar B Que lunch at camp. 15 years ago we had the 60th Anniversary and about 250 people were in attendance. Along with the new pool and new Retreat Cabins that will be under construction at that time, celebrating the 75th with your Lutherhoma family is a great reason to come to camp next September.

I often think about the beginnings of Camp Lutherhoma. As mentioned above, times were tough for most Americans in the 1930’s, and what a crazy thing to try to start a camp during those tough times. But, God had a plan. He knew what Lutherhoma would look like in 2008, and He knew before the beginning of time whose lives would be touched because of the love of Jesus that is shared here. It must have been very difficult for those founders to dream of a camp. God used their efforts and He prevailed.

Outreach: Lutherhoma Mission Is Expanding - In order to reach people, we must go to people. This is something that we at Camp Lutherhoma believe in. Every year at camp we offer retreats and summer programs to people of all ages to come and participate in, and we find value and have been fortunate enough to see God’s hand in it all. However, there is an even bigger opportunity for Camp Lutherhoma and God’s ministry outside of our camp grounds. Outreach projects we have been doing and are working on allow us opportunities to help and serve our community in Tahlequah, state-wide, and even outside the United States.

Outreach to the elderly - Heritage Place is an assisted living home located in Tahlequah, OK. For the past two summers now our summer staff has volunteered time, whether it is doing arts and crafts, participating in bingo, or playing dominoes with the residents. The staff has also had the opportunity to put on a worship service for the residents every other Sunday throughout the summer.

Outreach in Mission Work - Spring break mission trips are also a big part of Camp Lutherhoma’s outreach ministry. Last March several college students from around the state of Oklahoma had the opportunity to go to Biloxi, Mississippi and help volunteer with hurricane relief work. This year our mission trip will be going to Juarez, Mexico. In Juarez college students will have the opportunity to build homes for families that currently do not have one.

Outreach in your Community - This year Camp Lutherhoma is looking to do more state wide outreach. With our program called Project Get Served, we are looking to have more of an impact on our surrounding communities. Project Get Served will come to your home congregation. From there we will run a community service/outreach program during the weekend with high school and college age youth. That same weekend we will provide a lock in full of games, activities, devotions, and worship for all participants at the host church. Project Get Served will start up this spring.

God has blessed us with a wonderful ministry here at Camp Lutherhoma. We are eagerly looking forward to the ministry that we can provide and do outside of camp as well. If you or your congregation has any questions or if you are interested in participating with any of this, please contact Isty at Camp Lutherhoma.:918-458-0704.  kristy@lutherhoma.com.
